In the case of the Internet, it was e-mail and discussion boards—not Web pages—that triggered the explosion from early adoption to mainstream consumer use. SMS services drove mobile data use and they still account for the majority of mobile data revenues by carriers.

It is not surprising, therefore, that mobile carriers and mobile content providers have warmed to mobile social networking as a new opportunity to ramp mobile Internet use. In truth, they have little choice. Their attempts to convince the mass market to sign up for mobile Internet have proved moderately successful, at best.

According to February 2008 research by Informa, the global market for all current forms of paid mobile entertainment should reach $31.7 billion by 2012. Back in 2006, the same forecast optimistically predicted $42 billion by 2011.

Juniper Research published a far more bullish outlook for mobile entertainment in January 2008, projecting $64.8 billion worldwide by 2012. Earlier research by Juniper also tried to quantify the revenues associated with mobile user-generated content such as chat room services or mobile dating, predicting $5.7 billion for 2012.

Even with the most upbeat projections, paid mobile content is a tiny market in comparison to revenues from communication-based mobile services. In the US alone, mobile data service revenues (predominantly message-based) reached $23 billion in 2007, according to industry trade group CTIA—The Wireless Association. Mobile messaging for SMS/MMS/IM/e-mail worldwide is expected to be between $100 billion and $200 billion by 2011. When voice traffic is included, the global mobile industry is on track for almost $1 trillion in total revenues by 2012.

The stark reality is that mobile users are more inclined toward communications or task-centric interactions with their mobile device than toward content or entertainment. The UK's Office of Communications study of global mobile markets showed a decided preference by users to engage in mobile data sessions that are communications-oriented rather than information-oriented. Even in Japan, long the poster child for mobile information services, the primary use for the mobile device was e-mail (57% of users) compared to mobile Internet access (20%).

The upshot for mobile carriers and mobile content providers is that they need a new context in which to pitch mobile data access to users. Without a compelling incentive for users to sign up for mobile data access, it is likely that mobile carriers will see their mobile data revenues jump sharply at first and then start to stall at around 30%, as was the case in Japan. Mobile social networking potentially could not only push mobile data access over that hump, but could pull in other communications services to a social networking session.

Mobile content providers also need a relaunch to jumpstart their business. To date, mobile content is generally considered difficult to find as well as inferior in quality to other media channels—a reputation that is somewhat deserved. Mobile social networking offers a new environment for content discovery through recommendation as well as distribution via the network effect.wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-26945187831847077752008-05-07T10:44:00.004-04:002008-05-07T10:54:48.574-04:00Will MySpace Revenues Add Up?The drumbeat of skepticism over social network advertising has gotten louder in recent months. Much of the focus has been on MySpace, the US leader with a 41.5% share of US visits to social networking and community sites in March, according to Hitwise.

IM reorganized its ad sales group in early April, leading to the departure of sales chief Michael Barrett. At the same time, news leaked that FIM might come up $100 million short of achieving the $1-billion fiscal 2008 revenue target set by News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch last June. (News Corp.'s fiscal year ends June 30.)

Financial analysts and the media have assumed that blame for the shortfall lies with MySpace, FIM's flagship, but FIM manages 12 other Internet properties, including IGN, FoxSports.com, RottenTomatoes.com and AmericanIdol.com. AmericanIdol.com will no doubt show strong revenues since the hot TV show is currently on-air. The smaller properties may not have fared as well and could very well take some of the blame.

eMarketer estimated last December that US marketers would spend $850 million to advertise on MySpace in calendar year 2008. It’s quite simple: PowerPoint presentation should have ten slides, last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font smaller than thirty points. While I’m in the venture capital business, this rule is applicable for any presentation to reach agreement: for example, raising capital, making a sale, forming a partnership, etc.

Ten is the optimal number of slides in a PowerPoint presentation because a normal human being cannot comprehend more than ten concepts in a meeting—and venture capitalists are very normal. (The only difference between you and a venture capitalist is that he is getting paid to gamble with someone else’s money). If you must use more than ten slides to explain your business, you probably don’t have a business. The ten topics that a venture capitalist cares about are:

Problem

Your solution

Business model

Underlying magic/technology

Marketing and sales

Competition

Team

Projections and milestones

Status and timeline

Summary and call to action

You should give your ten slides in twenty minutes. Sure, you have an hour time slot, but you’re using a Windows laptop, so it will take forty minutes to make it work with the projector. Even if setup goes perfectly, people will arrive late and have to leave early. In a perfect world, you give your pitch in twenty minutes, and you have forty minutes left for discussion.

The majority of the presentations that I see have text in a ten point font. As much text as possible is jammed into the slide, and then the presenter reads it. However, as soon as the audience figures out that you’re reading the text, it reads ahead of you because it can read faster than you can speak. The result is that you and the audience are out of synch.

The reason people use a small font is twofold: first, they don’t know their material well enough; second, they think that more text is more convincing. Total bozosity. Force yourself to use no font smaller than thirty points. I guarantee it will make your presentations better because it requires you to find the most salient points and to know how to explain them well. If “thirty points” is too dogmatic, the I offer you an algorithm: find out the age of the oldest person in your audience and divide it by two. That’s your optimal font size.

So please observe the 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint. The company plans for an official launch of its platform and offerings in both its home state and China by the end of 2008, followed by a US debut in early 2009. According to Nurien, the infusion will be used to hasten its launches later this year, the process of which begins this month in closed-beta form in Korea only.

The focus of the company is one of virtual social interaction and gameplay, a la Second Life. Users of its services will be able to do all the standard stuff of creating avatars and interacting with fellow participatants. They will also be given access to a games whose titles include: “MStar”, a dance-based development; “Runway”, which is centered on fashion; and “QuizStar”, a so-called “casual online game.”
Nurien is banking on an increase in demand for virtual networking and gameplay to achieve global success. The company references projections made by the industrial analyst Gartner and the research firm eMarketer - the first sees a virtual usership of 50 million in 2011 among all market players; the latter envisions 20 million young adults as visitors to such online environments by the same year. It also sees the expectation of IDC that China’s 2010 gaming revenues will reach $2.62bn, as well as Parks Associate’s prediction that US gaming will total some $3.5 billion in 2009, as reason to believe in strong launches in both Asia and America. If such figures prove accurate, Nurien’s outlook may be quite well calculated.
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-19256351772338637172008-04-23T01:47:00.004-04:002008-04-23T02:01:01.735-04:00iGoogle + OpenSocial = ?iGoogle, Google’s personalized homepage is on its way to becoming a of social network thanks to their just announced adoption of the OpenSocial API. From video ads to widget ads, a lot of brands, advertising networks, content owners and publishers are still feeling out the best way in which to monetize sites and audiences.
While most ad networks offer one way or another to target ads across websites, what would you think about having several methods available within a single ad network? AdBrite is becoming that single ad network, with the revelation of its Open Targeting Exchange (OTX).

It’s an open platform approach that other advertising technologies can build upon. That means that a starting ad network can use AdBrite’s OTX in order to use one or many of the targeting methods it already can deploy, and building a company from there. Targeting options include geographic, demographic, retargeting, contextual and behavioral. And as this OTX is providing access to AdBrite’s platform, other companies can leverage AdBrite’s existing network of publishers and advertisers as well. Is this the best of both worlds?

AdBrite is hoping to compete, on some level, with the larger ad networks like Google and Yahoo–at least by putting on the pressure with its open platform strategy. AdBrite expects that the ability to build on its existing tools will help spur some innovation in attempts to discover the best approach to targeted ads.
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-60938631941546730842008-04-10T10:08:00.001-04:002008-04-10T10:17:45.245-04:00Meebo Brings Warner Executive to Land Fortune 500 Ad Deals
Meebo has been heavily involved with finding branding opportunities for marketing campaigns that work within the realm of its web-based IM tool, so it’s no shocker that it’s brought on an industry veteran to run its direct sales team. Carter Brokaw is the newest executive team member for Meebo, and he will be acting as the Chief Revenue Officer, in charge of sales, advertising sales and monetization strategies.

Hailing from Warner Music Group, where Brokaw was a part of the company’s direct-to-consumer sector, Brokaw also has more than ten years of experience form CNET Networks under his belt, where he worked in several sales management positions. So what’s it mean for Meebo? The IM service will be looking to land more deals with Fortune 500 companies, and provide an integrated solution for brand marketing and a touch of market research. In the words of Brokaw himself, he’s “looking forward to helping leverage Meebo’s core strength by bringing brands into the conversation in ways that are engaging, integrated and measurable.”

With the introduction of affiliate programs and a platform on which third parties can create chat-inclusive applications, Meebo has branched off quite a bit from its initial web-based tool. From what I’ve heard from various members of the Meebo team, this is the exact direction in which Meebo wants to go, and as the company has always been pretty careful about the advertising methods and companies that it runs campaigns with, having someone with the extensive knowledge that Brokaw brings to the table is necessary for continued growth.
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-38975540760065679752008-04-09T13:35:00.003-04:002008-04-09T13:36:53.091-04:00Yahoo Reveals Details of Its New Ad Sales SystemSUNNYVALE, Calif. — Yahoo is beginning to pull the wraps off an online advertising system that the company said would help it and its partners drive sales of graphical and other premium ads.

Yahoo said the system, called AMP and still months away from being ready, would greatly simplify the task of selling online ads, allowing Yahoo’s publishing partners, for instance, to place ads on their own sites as well as on Yahoo and on the sites of other publishers in the company’s growing network. Advertisers will be able to focus those ads by demographic profile, geography and online behavior, the company said.

Yahoo is developing the system as other Internet giants, including Google, Microsoft and AOL, are all stepping up their efforts to become sellers and brokers of all types of ads on sites across the Web. Many analysts expect Google, which recently completed its acquisition of the ad-serving specialist DoubleClick, to begin making inroads into the market for graphical ads online, which Yahoo dominates.

“This gives Yahoo a little leadership in vision,” said Rachel Happe, an analyst with IDC, a consulting firm. But Ms. Happe noted that Yahoo’s last big advertising project, a platform known as Panama and intended to reach people searching the Internet, was plagued by lengthy delays. She said it would be “problematic” for Yahoo if it were not able to deliver AMP on time.

Yahoo executives first discussed the new system publicly in February at an Interactive Advertising Bureau meeting, calling it the Advertiser and Publisher Exchange. Yahoo executives, trying to convince shareholders that a bid by Microsoft to acquire the company underestimated Yahoo’s worth, said the new system would help Yahoo outpace the growth of the online graphical advertising market over the next three years.

Yahoo has begun showing the system to publishers in its newspaper consortium, which includes hundreds of daily and weekly newspapers. Those newspapers are slated to become the first users of AMP, which Yahoo expects to begin rolling out in the late summer or in the fall. The New York Times Company’s Regional Media Group, which includes 15 newspapers, is a member of the consortium.

“Yahoo clearly has put a full-court press on developing this platform,” said George B. Irish, president of Hearst Newspapers, which owns 12 dailies that are part of the Yahoo consortium.

“I think it’s going to be very important for us,” said William Dean Singleton, chief executive of MediaNews Group, which operates 57 daily newspapers in 12 states. “Giving us the ability to sell targeted online advertising will allow us, I think, to charge more for advertising online.”

Hilary Schneider, Yahoo’s executive vice president for global partner solutions, said that AMP was “about opening Yahoo’s capabilities to the entire Web.”

With AMP, a newspaper ad sales representative working with an advertiser, like a car dealer, would be able to easily see the ad space available on not only the newspaper’s site but also Yahoo and other Web publishers’ sites. The sales person could slice that inventory by demographic profile to, for instance, aim ads for a new hybrid S.U.V. to females of a specific income and age group. The system will help streamline a manual and time-consuming effort, Ms. Schneider said.

The system, which was built out of a combination of technologies developed at Yahoo and others Yahoo obtained when it bought Right Media, BlueLithium and other companies, will also serve ads directly to publishers’ sites and allow marketers to monitor their performance.

AMP’s targeting capabilities could, in theory, help Yahoo and others sell ads at higher prices, said Barry Parr, an analyst with Jupiter Research. But Mr. Parr noted that Yahoo has had difficulty focusing ads effectively on its own site and that AMP’s effectiveness remained to be proved.
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-22476938888326675672008-04-09T13:35:00.001-04:002008-04-09T13:35:21.440-04:00Online sales expected to rise 17% in 2008
NEW YORK — Online spending is expected to rise a robust 17% this year, despite a sluggish economy that has bruised many brick-based retailers, according to an annual survey to be released Tuesday.

Retail sales online, excluding travel purchases, are set to grow to $204 billion in 2008 from $174.5 billion last year, fueled by sales of apparel, computers and autos, according to a survey conducted by Internet analysis firm Forrester Research for Shop.org, the online arm of the National Retail Federation trade group. That projection is below the 21% increase seen in the prior year, but industry officials attribute it to the maturing of the business, not the sluggish economy.

E-commerce "is clearly the bright spot in retailing," said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org.

The upbeat report contrasts with the outlook for many traditional retailers, which have been paring down store growth and closing shops as they struggle with consumers who don't feel like spending amid higher gas and food costs, a housing slump and a weaker job market. The exceptions are discounters and wholesale clubs, as shoppers turn to less expensive stores.

On Thursday, the nation's retailers are expected to report at best flat sales growth in March, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. Same-stores sales are sales at stores opened at least a year and are considered a key indicator of a retailer's health.

Online retailers are not immune to the same economic challenges, but what has spearheaded e-commerce growth is a "tale of two shoppers that visit the Web for different reasons," according to Sucharita Mulpuru, a Forrester Research analyst and lead author of the report.

There are the price-sensitive shoppers who appear to be buying more items online as they look for better prices. And then there are the more affluent customers, who have been increasing their online spending because of the convenience and vast offerings.

But those shoppers looking for a bevy of free online shipping deals may not find them as plentiful as they did last year. The study, which surveyed 125 online retailers in February and March, showed that merchants are less interested in using such promotions this year. While 85% of online retailers said they used some shipping incentive in the past year, just 35% said they would focus more on these types of deals in 2008.

Instead, retailers said they plan to invest more in advertising on social networking sites like myspace.com and facebook.com, according to the survey.

That may not be the best strategy, according to Mulpuru.

"It's great for brand-building and for buzz, but it's still unproven how social networking drives direct revenue" for retailers, said Mulpuru.
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-51526069367471333952008-04-09T13:33:00.001-04:002008-04-09T13:34:50.327-04:00Online Video: A Changing Picture“Convergence” sounds like an idea tossed around in the 1990s that never came to pass. But don’t be fooled. Today, most video consumed online is snackable video—bite-sized entertainment—rather than a complete meal of TV episodes or full-length movies.

The most popular video content consists of short pieces: news clips, jokes, movie trailers, music videos, clips from TV shows and entertainment news.

“As technology problems are solved, however, making the computer-television connection more viable and pleasurable for the average consumer,” says David Hallerman, eMarketer Senior Analyst, “online video content will expand in both length and breadth, and professionally-produced material will become a large part of the menu.”

It hasn’t happened yet, but full-blown convergence between television and the Internet is on the way. “The trend toward greater video convergence is being driven by factors such as broadband, digital TV and, ironically, the fragmentation of the audience,” says Mr. Hallerman. “Fragmentation is forcing the networks and studios to reach out to where the audience lives.”
People prefer the Internet to TV when it comes to convenience, control and the ability to find enjoyable content,” says Mr. Hallerman. “TV wins out for relaxation, sharing the experience with friends and family and less annoying advertising than online.”

The technical and viewer preference obstacles to convergence are many, and they won’t be overcome easily or quickly. “Surveys have found that roughly half of all US consumers who watch video watch at least some of it online,” says Mr. Hallerman. “That percentage isn’t going down, and the desire for convergence isn’t going away.”
wsjounghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16078599926344033884noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7673181846534469801.post-34659007276853992702008-04-09T13:32:00.000-04:002008-04-09T13:33:05.107-04:00[PS3] If you can not play only BD
Playing the bundled Spider-Man 3 disc the following happens:
-Swirly "loading" icon in top right of TV
-Spider-Man logo appears in white, then "loads" and fills in black as it does
-TV loses signal, searches for it, then finds "no signal".
