iTunes is the Top Music Retailer in the US

Apple has announced that iTunes has surpassed Wal-Mart, thus becoming the top music retailer in the US, according to the NPD Group. iTunes has sold over four billion songs. Further it features the world’s largest music catalog with over six million songs, claims Apple.

“We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone.”

The result is based on the data collected by the NPD Group’s MusicWatch survey, which captures consumer reported past week unit purchases and counts one CD representing 12 tracks, excluding wireless transactions.

iTunes is the largest music retailer in the US, based on the amount of music sold during January and February 2008. The first two months of the year are considered to be the holiday season, which boosts music lovers to buy, share and gift favorite music, which could be the possible reason of such huge music sales.
